Struck by a mine laid by the German submarine U 32, 9th January 1916, 60 miles east of Malta.
Their is some confusion whether this photo is HMS Russell or Cornwallis but the latter is more likely.

HMS Russell - Following the Dardanelles campaign Russell stayed on in the eastern Mediterranean. Hit 2 mines off Malta 27 April 1916 laid by the German submarine U 73. A total of 27 officers and 98 ratings were lost.

SS River Clyde - Photo taken after it was salvaged. Used as a 'trojan horse' she was beached at Cape Helles, Gallipoli with 2,000 soldiers, mainly from the 1st Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers, 29th Division, also the Royal Dublin Fusiliers.
The mission was unsuccessful.
