Reported sunk by depth charges by the Italian forces near Tripoli. The submarine was spotted by aircraft off Zuara, Libyan coast. The Italian corvetta Pegaso dropped depth charges. Oil was seen after the attack but no debris was collected.

One other theory about the loss was that the Italian motor torpedo boat Pleiade sank the submarine off Tripoli but this is considered unlikely.
